Donington’s Tom Wood wins 2015 title

Tom crowned Formula Kart Stars Junior Champion!

Donington Park supported karting superstar Tom Wood has sensationally been crowned Formula Kart Stars champion in the junior category, after another stunning double victory success at the Rowrah kart circuit in Cumbria.

Such is Tom’s domination of the F1-backed championship, the 13-year-old wrapped up the prestigious title with two rounds still to go. Tom’s double success is his second successive weekend clean sweep, having also won both rounds at the Three Sisters circuit near Wigan earlier this month, and also means he has finished on the podium at every single round this year.

Wood had started the weekend well with a win in the first Heat on Saturday, but his performance in the all-important first day Final edged him ever closer to the title. Leading by nearly four seconds at the end of lap one, he made his intentions clear, and claimed his fifth round win of the year by a massive (in kart racing) 8.6 seconds.

With confidence high, Tom utterly dominated Sunday’s action, winning each of his Heats, before storming to victory again in the Final, this time by an even more impressive 9.7 seconds, and by doing so, claiming the FKS Junior Championship title in the process in record time.

Tom’s achievements in the championship supported by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone as well as many of the leading GP teams, is expected to open up many career options for the talented racer. He receives free entry to next year’s Formula Kart Stars Championship, entry to a Ginetta sports car Scholarship for young drivers, as well as an official invite to the glittering Autosport Awards ceremony in London in December, where he will appear on stage in front of hundreds of motorsport’s biggest names. Notably, this was the occasion some 20 years ago, where Lewis Hamilton first introduced himself to McLaren F1 team boss Ron Dennis, who eventually propelled Hamilton into motorsports top echelon. Maybe Tom will get the same chance.

Tom commented: "It was such a great weekend, winning both the rounds and coming away with the title. It's a huge honour to have such a prestigious well-known brand as Donington on my kart and my race suit. Without Donington Park’s support, I wouldn't have had this incredible opportunity."

Donington Park Managing Director Christopher Tate commented: “We are absolutely delighted to see Tom clinch the Formula Kart Stars Junior title. We knew he was a fantastic talent when we started backing him, but this year he’s really stepped every aspect of his performance up a further level. We feel that it’s now clear that Britain has another potential superstar to keep an eye on. We look forward to discussing his next options with Tom, and are sure that 2016 will be just as exciting for us, his Mum and Dad Moira and Mike – and for him!”
