Donington gears up for Classic Motorcycle Festival extravaganza

The Donington Classic Motorcycle Festival returns to Donington Park this weekend (7-9 August) for three days of incredible historic motorcycle racing action, with a glittering cast of star guests and huge exhibitions and displays.

The Festival has quickly established itself as one of the premier classic bike events in Europe, with this year’s star guests including Freddie Spencer, Jim Redman, Niall Mackenzie, Steve Parrish, Ron Haslam and Sammy Miller. Most will take part in on track parades and all will make other appearances across the weekend. Parrish will host a special version of his acclaimed live tour in the Donington Park museum, with many of the star guests also taking part.

On track, over 500 bikes are expected to compete in the packed 45 race schedule. Racing highlights include the UK round of the 2015 FIM Europe Vintage Championships, round four of the ACU Classic 500cc Championship, round four of the ACU Post Classic 350cc Championship, and the Wheatcroft Trophy for pre-1986 machines.

Further on track action comes from the Lansdowne Cup Series race for Grand Prix machines from the 1950s and 60s and the UK round of the Camathias Cup for pre-1972 sidecars. A total of 10 races will take place on Friday, 17 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC) will again hold the Classic Clubs Show in the Exhibition Centre, which will see over 40 motorcycle and scooter clubs attending, including bikes from the UK, Europe and Japan, with more than 480 machines expected to form displays, one of the largest shows dedicated to motorcycles.

The centrepiece of the exhibition will be the VJMC stand which will see over 60 bikes on display with examples from the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s on show. Expect to see bikes from Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and more on display here.

The majority of the machines on display will then take part in the exhibitor’s parade on track during the Sunday lunchtime, one of the longest bike parades seen at any racing circuit.

Other exciting machines on display will come from Sammy Miller’s famous collection of historic machinery, bikes from the big screen courtesy of the Dick Shepherd Triumph Factory Motorcycle Museum, as well as further machinery from the other star names including Niall Mackenzie’s Virgin Yamaha R7 and Cadbury’s Boost Yamaha. These displays will be in the Paddock Suite, located within the circuit paddock.
