Donington Park to commemorate 40th anniversary in 2017

East Midlands circuit Donington Park will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of its re-opening under Tom Wheatcroft’s stewardship this year, with a number of initiatives throughout the season.

In 1971, after lying in a derelict state for many years post World War Two, Wheatcroft purchased part of the 1,100 acre Donington Hall estate, which included the old race track (made famous by the iconic ‘Silver Arrows’ in the 1930s) and set about rebuilding it, before the first races took place in May 1977. Since that time, the Leicestershire circuit has become one of Europe’s leading motorsport venues, with a busy calendar of world class events both on and off the circuit. Yesterday (Thursday), the future of Donington Park was secured after MotorSport Vision (MSV) agreed a deal to acquire the circuit business and lease the estate for a 21 year period.

A commemorative logo has been commissioned to celebrate the anniversary, which will be given widespread use this year. The logo will appear on the Donington website, as well as on social media and across the venue, as well as on all publicity material in 2017. As well as this, all competitors racing at the circuit in 2017 will be given decals featuring the logo to display on their race cars or bikes.

There will be a heavy social media campaign during the season on Donington Park’s official Twitter and Facebook feeds, with flashbacks to major talking points or reminders of key dates in the circuit’s history.

Visitors at events in 2017 will also be able to read extensive articles of classic events in this year’s race event programmes, while a special magazine will also be produced in time for the summer, recalling classic memories of races throughout the past 40 years at the circuit, with profits going to charity.

The milestone will also be marked during the Donington Historic Festival on 28-30 April, and the Donington Classic Motorcycle Festival on 4-6 August.

Donington Park Managing Director Christopher Tate commented: “2017 promises to be a special year for Donington Park, as we reflect on the huge success of the past 40 years. In that time we’ve hosted some iconic events, made plenty of history, as well as riding the inevitable peaks and troughs that come with operating a venue such as ours. Donington is now at its peak, and we’re looking forward to celebrating our rich heritage throughout the year, while always keeping an eye on a very exciting future with MSV following yesterday's announcement.”
