Donington Park to host opening round of 2017 MCE British Superbike Championship season
Donington Park will host the opening round of the 2017 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship season on the weekend of 31 March – 2 April, it has been confirmed today (Thursday).
British Superbikes (BSB) is the world’s leading domestic motorcycle racing series, and one of the biggest events to visit Donington throughout the year. The East Midlands circuit last held the opening round of the championship back in 2015, welcoming a record crowd in the process.
Donington Park Managing Director Christopher Tate commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be confirmed as hosts of the opening round of the 2017 MCE British Superbike Championship season. With so many of the teams and riders based locally and with an enthusiastic East Midlands fan base, it’s a decision we are sure will be popular, and we look forward to working Stuart Higgs and the BSB team to promote this always spectacular and extremely important event. As ever with an opening round, the atmosphere and racing will be very exciting, as the teams and riders look to start their season in the best possible way.”
As well as the British Superbikes, a full package of support races will also take place, including the British Supersport Championship, British Superstock and more, with hundreds of riders set to race across the weekend.
Donington will also host a vital pre-season test day for the championship, with the date to be confirmed.
This year’s BSB round at Donington in September saw another extremely strong crowd attend, with new facilities including the popular infield campsite providing plenty of entertainment for bike fans. Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne took a double victory to dent local-hope Leon Haslam’s title bid, with the two going head to head for the crown this weekend at Brands Hatch.
Tickets for this event will go on sale shortly, look out for further announcements.
