Donington Rally to kick off 40th Anniversary season this Sunday

The Imperial Commercials Volkswagen Donington Rally will launch the 2017 Donington Park season this Sunday (5 March), with a capacity entry of 80 cars set to take on the unique challenges of stage rallying.

A total of eight stages will take place, with the circuit transformed several times during the day with added obstacles including tyre chicanes, off road sections and tight hairpin turns set to provide a stern challenge to the drivers and ensuring plenty of tyre smoke, handbrake turns and power slides!

The rally is the sixth round of the Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship, which has ensured a strong entry for the event, with plenty of traditional rally machinery on the capacity entry list. Cars such as Ford Escorts, Metro 6R4s, Subaru Imprezas and Mitsubishi Evos are all confirmed and are set to invoke memories of the days when drivers such as Ari Vatanen, Colin McRae and Tommi Makinen competed at Donington when the circuit hosted stages for the RAC Rally in the 1980s and 90s.

As well as classic rally machinery, there are also a number of less familiar cars, including spectacular Darrians, which have proved successful at recent rallies at Donington, right down to cars more likely to be seen on city streets, including Ford Kas and Fiat Puntos!

Drivers to look out for this weekend include TV stunt driver Paul Swift, who leads the championship standings in his Ford Escort Mk2, while former British GT champion David Ashburn will pilot a Mitsubishi Evo at a venue he knows well from his sportscar days.

The event will start at 9.20am, with an estimated finish time of 5.30pm. Circuit gates will open at 7.30am, with spectacular views of the action available from the infield bankings, as well as the popular viewing areas around the outside of the circuit.

Entry to the Donington Rally is just £10 for adults, with free entry for children aged 13 and under. Tickets will be available upon arrival at the circuit, with spectator entry at Gate 21 (Melbourne hairpin). For more information, click here.
