Haslam hammers to the double at Donington
Donington Park ambassador Leon Haslam clinched a stunning double victory in the opening rounds of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Donington Park today (Sunday April 2).
Haslam won both contests in impressive style, with a five second victory in the opening race, which he started from pole position, and then backed that up by fighting from third position in race two, to overtake returning champion Josh Brookes with a handful of laps remaining to complete his ideal start to the season.
Haslam’s team mate Luke Mossey was second in race one, with Christian Iddon third. Peter Hickman, James Ellison, who led until lap seven, and Glenn Irwin completed the top six.
In race two, Haslam had to fight past Brookes, with Irwin mounting a late charge to take the final step on the podium. Christian Iddon, Mossey and Ellison were next up, ahead of former World Champion Sylvain Guintili, Peter Hickman, Davide Giugliano and Jason O’Halloran.
Haslam commented after race two: “Josh built a big gap at the start after I made a mistake, and I had to fight back. I didn’t want to push too hard but Josh’s tyres started to drop in the last few laps and I was able to make it count. A big thanks to the team and we have to take each race as it comes, I know what to expect in this series now after last year’s return, and hope to keep fighting at the front.”
Haslam’s victories came in fantastic spring weather, with Donington Park basking in sunshine, with a bumper crowd present to witness the racing action.
The next major event at Donington Park is the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship on 15-16 April, with tickets available from just £15. For more information, and to book tickets, click here.
