Haslam targets the title in 2017 British Superbikes

Leon Haslam will return to the MCE Insurance British Superbike grid next year, after confirming today (Wednesday 9 November) that he will ride a Kawasaki in the 2017 championship.

The news means local man Haslam will be one of the star attractions when the opening round of British Superbikes takes place at Donington on 31 March - 2 April, and is set to renew his battle with five time series champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne.

Switching to the Bournemouth Kawasaki team after his JG Speedfit team withdrew from racing, Haslam will enjoy backing from Kawasaki UK, and will be partnered at the team by Luke Mossey.

Haslam, from Smalley in Derbyshire, took nine wins in British Superbikes this year after moving from World Superbikes, with a highlight being a treble win at Oulton Park. He took the title fight with Byrne to the final round, narrowly missing out on the championship at the final round.

In hot demand, Haslam had options to race outside the UK, but after a stunning return to British Superbikes, has elected to remain in the series in a bid to take the title.

He commented: “This year was a good one for me; it was my first season with Kawasaki and also the first back in BSB with the no electrics rule. It was a tough year revisiting some of the tracks I hadn’t been to for eight years, but we came out fighting at every round.

“I had some interesting options in the World Superbike Championship, but I know with this package we are going to be battling for wins and a championship title. The aim for me is always to win and of course Shakey will be the target, but we both go into the new season with a year on our respective manufacturers so I feel we are in a similar position. We go into the 2017 season ahead of where we started this year and I feel with the development and testing programme we have ahead of us that we will be ready to roll when it comes to Donington Park for the first round.”
