Hat-trick hero Haslam on top of the pile heading into home British Superbike round at Donington

Derbyshire Superbike ace Leon Haslam is the man to beat as the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship heads to Donington Park this weekend (16-18 September) for the first round of the crucial ‘Showdown’ phase.

Haslam, from Smalley, made history at Oulton Park last weekend by winning all three races, the first time he has accomplished such a feat, while his JG Speedfit Kawasaki team finished first, second and third in the opening race of the weekend – the first time this has ever been accomplished in BSB history.

Haslam’s first victory came on Saturday, where he started from third on the grid but hit the front at the midway point of the race to take victory by over four seconds, with team mate James Ellison second and Peter Hickman completing the historic 1-2-3 finish for the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team. He made it two from two in Sunday’s first race, again fighting from third and pulling off two overtaking moves to take another victory, while main rival Byrne crashed out of contention. The dream weekend was secured with a triumph in race three.

As a result of his perfect weekend, Haslam leap-frogged Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne at the top of the standings. With Oulton Park settling the race to become a Showdown ‘Title Fighter’, Haslam has a slender three points lead over Byrne, meaning there’s plenty to play for as the field thunders into Donington Park for what is set to be a vital weekend for the championship race. Australian Jason O’Halloran, and British riders James Ellison, Dan Linfoot and Luke Mossey are the remaining riders who are all still in the title race.

The British Superbikes will race twice on Sunday, with Haslam and Byrne likely to be the men to beat, while there will also be breathtaking support races from the Dickies British Supersport Championship, Pirelli National Superstock 600 & 1000, British Motostar, KTM British Junior Cup, World Sidecars and British Sidecars.

As well as a bursting schedule of races, there is plenty of off track excitement to look out for across the site, including fun activities for children, as well as the return of the popular infield campsite, which will include live bands and giant family games.

Donington Park Managing Director Christopher Tate commented: “The MCE British Superbike Showdown opener at Donington Park is guaranteed to be an absolute thriller. With Leon, with whom we enjoy a strong relationship with through our good friends at the Honda Ron Haslam Race School, and Shakey Byrne separated by just three points at the top of the standings, I think we’re going to see some very exciting racing between the pair, and of course the rest of the BSB field. With a full support race package and plenty of entertainment around the venue, there’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy at Donington this weekend!”
