Home grown talent Tom Wood set for ‘special’ Donington debut this weekend!
Castle Donington racer Tom Wood is ready for his debut race at Donington Park, after years of backing and support from his home circuit.
The 14-year-old, who will race in the Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship which supports the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) this weekend, has never had the opportunity to race at Donington until now, having enjoyed years of success in karting.
“I can’t wait to finally race at Donington” he commented. “The circuit has provided massive support for me over the years and to finally race there is going to be something special.”
Wood is the reigning Formula Kart Stars Junior champion, having romped to title glory last year, and he made an accomplished debut in car racing in Ginetta Juniors two weeks ago at Brands Hatch, securing a first ever visit to the podium with third place in the rookie class.
Racing with Elite Motorsport, Tom is hoping to continue his excellent progress so far with a strong performance at his home venue. “It’s been a big step up to cars from karting, but it’s amazing being with the BTCC package as there are TV cameras everywhere and thousands of spectators. I’ve even got used to signing autographs!
“It’s even more enjoyable than karting as it’s great to be racing in front of massive crowds and that is a great feeling. There’s been no increase in pressure though because wherever I am or whatever I do, I want to win.
“I just can’t wait to be racing at Donington this weekend. The support from the circuit means everything. If they hadn’t supported me then I wouldn’t be here racing this weekend in front of thousands of people, so I’m really grateful to Christopher Tate and all the team at Donington Park. I hope we can get some great results to say thanks!”
Tom will race at Donington three times this weekend, with his first two races at 14.30 and 17.10 on Saturday, while his race at 13.40 will be broadcast live on ITV4. Further racing action comes from the ever dramatic British Touring Cars, as well as single seaters from the Ford MSA Formula, sportscars of the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup, and tin tops from Renault UK Clio Cup.
