Last ditch Byrne topples Kiyonari in final practice

Reigning champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne topped the times in the final free practice session for the MCE British Superbike Championship at Donington Park this morning, with a late lap which broke Ryuichi Kiyonari’s stranglehold of the weekend so far.

Kiyonari had led the times for the majority of the session, and the weekend so far, but Byrne’s time with just a couple of minutes remaining was enough to put him 0.090s clear of his Japanese rival.

Australian Josh Brookes was third quickest on the Milwaukee Yamaha, two tenths off Kiyonari, with Dan Linfoot fourth for the returning Honda team. Stuart Easton and James Ellison completed the top six riders.

Luke Mossey and James Buchan were seventh and eighth ahead of James Westmoreland in ninth despite a fall. Billy McConnell completed the top-10 on the Smiths Racing BMW.

The top-13 riders were all covered by less than a second, pointing to a very competitive qualifying session for BSB, which starts at 16.05.

Tickets are available on the gate for today’s action for just £15 and free entry for children aged 13 and under.
