Legend Fogarty predicts British dominance at UK World Superbike round
Carl Fogarty, the four time World Superbike Champion and ‘King of the Jungle’, will be a special guest at the Donington Park round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend (27-29 May), and the legendary racer is predicting total British domination at one of his favourite circuits.
British riders have won all but one of the 12 World Superbike races so far this year, with reigning champion Jonathan Rea leading the standings again, 42 points clear of nearest rival Chaz Davies, with Tom Sykes third; Sykes has won every World Superbike race at Donington for the last three years and is many people’s tip for the top step this weekend. Fogarty believes whoever wins, they’ll almost certainly be British:
“World Superbikes is really close to my heart, and it’s great to see it getting back up there. For a British person, it’s an absolutely fantastic time to be a World Superbike fan, you know that pretty much every weekend a British guy is going to win. For the past two years it’s been British dominance all the way and I expect that to carry on this weekend.
“I love coming to Donington Park, it’s one of my favourite tracks and I’m getting right behind the British guys this weekend, and I fully expect a British 1-2-3 in both World Superbike races.”
Britain also boasts a strong line-up in the support categories this weekend, particularly in World Supersport, and Fogarty expects the British riders to go well here too. “The Brits always seem to go well at their home circuit, and hopefully we’ll see a few more wildcard riders as well. We’ve got some really promising riders coming up, and Kyle Smith is looking particularly spectacular. We could well see British riders filling the top three in a lot of the races at Donington this weekend.”
Fogarty, the most successful World Superbike rider of all time, was present at the circuit on Sunday for the fans meet and greet session at the museum, and rekindled his experiences of his time in the ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me out of Here’ jungle, which returned him to the limelight two years ago. “For the first 24 hours I was thinking ‘what the hell have I done here?’ But eventually I just relished being in there with a good bunch of guys and it was an experience I’ll never forget. I thought I’d be the first one out and then every day after I thought I was going to go, but thanks to the fans I won the thing, which was amazing. I loved it, and it’s something I’ll never forget.”
