Over 60 riders take part in Women Only Motorcycle Trackday
Over 60 women were on track at Donington Park last week, for the second running of the Women’s Only Motorcycle Trackdays with Maria Costello MBE.
Riders ranged from total newcomers to those experienced on track, as well as British Winter Olympian Aimee Fuller. In fact, 30 of them were riding on track for the very first time. Each participant was able to take advantage of coaching from Maria and her team of instructors. Riders also benefited from track photography, bike hire, suspension set-up and mechanical and tyre assistance, with a light hearted ‘awards ceremony’ and certificate presentation completing the day.
The number of riders is the largest Maria has seen on a Women Only Motorcycle Trackday, and she was delighted with the turn out. “It was an absolutely fantastic day and brilliant to see so many women taking to the track,” she commented. “Seeing them all make amazing progress is so rewarding but that is what the day is all about. The atmosphere was fabulous, it was great to see so many returning riders on track and lots of new ones too. I would love to encourage even more women onto the track at my next event on the 14th October. I have to say that I couldn’t have done these events without the support of Donington Park, so thanks to all the team there.”
Team GB Winter Olympian snowboarder Aimee Fuller was one of the riders taking part, and she commented: “The day was so much fun, and a massive adrenaline rush. You get lots of track time so you’re absolutely buzzing once you come off track. I started in the beginner group, not really knowing what I was doing, but by the end of the day I felt quite competent, and I was overtaking and picking up speed!
“It doesn’t matter what level rider you are. I came here starting at the back but you can follow Maria around the track and learn her lines. Before you know it, you’re overtaking people and it’s a great experience.
“The instructors are fantastic, really friendly and helpful. There are people on hand whenever you need it and they give great advice and you can speak to them whenever you need to. I’d recommend it to anyone!”
Jo Gunton, a rider on the day commented: “What an amazing day! My first ever track day and I’m already checking my diary for the next one. The improvement from start to finish was huge and it was a really supportive environment.”
Gemma Viles, who also took part in the event added: “What a day at Donington! I could not have wished for better, sunshine, biscuits, cake and lots of track time. I loved the relaxed atmosphere and huge amounts of space on track to do your own thing. I was really proud to have had the chance to share some track time with such a quality bunch of people.”
