Parrish: “The Donington Classic Motorcycle Festival has grown massively”
Steve Parrish has become a regular visitor to the Donington Classic Motorcycle Festival, and this weekend’s event (7-9 August) marks his third visit to what has quickly become one of the premier classic bike events in Europe.
“The Donington Classic Motorcycle Festival has grown massively - for a start more and more people come along now because it’s such a big event,” Parrish commented while attending the Ron Haslam Race School at the circuit.
“The Classic Motorcycle Racing Club run a terrific event and I love watching the Nortons and taking in the smells and the noises of the singles and the twins and fours and everything else that goes on.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to see the classic machinery and get a whiff of the smell of the old bikes and take in the friendly atmosphere. Fans can walk into the garages and can see everything that is going on, they can spend all day in the paddock talking to the riders and that’s the real key to it, it’s like going back in time. I wish I could go back in time, but I can’t so I’m happy to be at the event where the past is brought forward!
“There’s such a bunch of nice people, it’s relaxed, there’s great camaraderie around and you can have a bit of a giggle and a smile and a cup of tea with someone. There’s a barbeque always burning somewhere around and there’s such a lovely friendly atmosphere.
“I’m really looking forward to it, I get the chance to ride some old bikes and I have no idea which one I’m riding this weekend, I let someone daft enough to lend me a bike and then I come along and put my leg over it!”
In addition to providing circuit commentary and taking part in the star parades on Saturday and Sunday, Steve will also be hosting a special version of his acclaimed live tour on Saturday evening in the Grand Prix Collection museum, with many of the special guests also taking part.
“There are one or two stories from Donington past that I’m looking forward to sharing with everyone!” Parrish quipped. “There will be a few extracts from my show, and we’re very lucky that Freddie Spencer will be joining us as well as Niall Mackenzie, Ron Haslam and Jim Redman, and I’m sure I’ll be able to find a few stories that they’re in as well. It will be a real fun night and there are only a handful of tickets left, so if you want a ticket you better get on with it!”
With a race schedule of over 45 races, as well as hundreds of display bikes across the venue, there’s something for everyone at this weekend’s Donington Classic Motorcycle Festival! For more information, click here.
