Plato dominates opening BTCC encounter at Donington

Team BMW Volkswagen’s Jason Plato dominated the first Dunlop MSA British Touring Car race at Donington Park this morning, heading home Gordon Shedden and Colin Turkington.

Plato started third, but made a strong start to challenge pole sitter and team mate Turkington at the Robert’s chicane at the end of the opening lap, and then extended his lead regularly. Shedden was able to force his way past Turkington at the Old Hairpin on lap two but wasn’t able to close the gap down to Plato, who claimed his 89th BTCC victory.

Behind the top-three, Donington local Andrew Jordan kept a watching brief to claim a safe fourth place, a long way ahead of BMW’s Sam Tordoff with Dave Newsham claiming sixth in the Power Maxed Chevrolet Cruze.

Jack Goff took seventh after an entertaining side-by-side scrap with BMW veteran Rob Collard, who soared through the field from 19th on the grid to take eighth. Adam Morgan started fourth but dropped down to ninth on the soft tyre with Rob Austin’s Audi completing the top-10.

The second BTCC race starts at 14.27, with tickets still available on the gate for £35.
