Rally veteran Bell savours return of Dukeries Rally at Donington Park
Brian Bell, a synonymous name with British rallying, is eagerly anticipating this Sunday’s (25 October) Rainworth Škoda Dukeries Rally at Donington Park, having competed at the circuit in various forms of rallying over several decades.
The Skegness resident even competed at Donington when the circuit last held the Dukeries Rally, back in 1970. The three-time winner of the Dukeries Rally commented: “It was one of the best single venue rallies I’ve done, and I immediately put in an entry for this one.
“I remember the event used most of the circuit and some of the surrounding areas, including a bit of gravel too and I remember going under the old Starkey’s bridge was quite daunting!”
Bell also competed in the RAC Rally at the circuit in the 1990s. “We were competing in the dark,” he commented. “Cars were started at one minute intervals and there was a Japanese driver starting in front of me. I caught him really quickly going down the Craners, but I’d always been told that the Old Hairpin wasn’t an overtaking place. But I needed to get by him, so I pulled out from behind him and manage to slide past him right on the apex of the corner, it wasn’t for the faint hearted!”
Still competing after decades of rallying, the 75-year-old still shows boundless enthusiasm for the sport: “I still love it, probably more than ever! The Dukeries Rally is one of the best in the country and I’m very proud to have won it three times, hopefully I can do the same this weekend, it’s going to be a great event.”
The Rainworth Škoda Dukeries Rally is the first competitive rally to be held at the circuit since 1998, and will have a full entry list of 80 cars. The event comprises of approximately 55 miles across eight planned stages, with the last stage scheduled to take place in darkness.
Tickets for the Rainworth ŠKODA Dukeries Rally at Donington Park on Sunday 25 October will be available for purchase upon arrival at the circuit for £10 with free entry for children aged 13 and under. For more information, visit www.donington-park.co.uk
