Rapid Plato tops opening BTCC practice at Donington Park

Team BMR’s Jason Plato topped the times in opening practice for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park this morning (Saturday).

Plato’s VW CC machine was over half a second quicker than Honda’s Gordon Shedden, with Donington local Andrew Jordan in third. Plato’s team mate and reigning champion Colin Turkington was fourth ahead of fellow VW-runner Aron Smith, with Adam Morgan sixth in his Mercedes.

Morgan’s fellow Mercedes runner Aiden Moffat was seventh ahead of Tom Ingram, with Josh Cook and Dave Newsham completing the top-10.

The young guns took their chance to star in the opening half of the 40 minute session, with Ingram and Tordoff leading the early running, before Jordan took over at the top.

An incident at Robert’s between Jack Goff and Hunter Abbott caused a brief red flag, with the session resuming with 10 minutes remaining. A flurry of on track activity ensued, and two laps below the 1m10 barrier from Plato ensured he ended fastest, and by a big margin.

The next action from the BTCC is the second practice session at 12.50 ahead of qualifying at 15.35.
