Stage rallying to kick off motorsport season at Donington Park
The Donington Park motorsport season starts on Sunday 6 March with the Imperial Commercials Volkswagen Donington Rally, organised by the Dukeries Motor Club.
A full entry of 80 cars will compete for honours across eight stages, with the circuit transformed so cars take on a multiple configuration of layouts, with tyre chicanes and off road segments included to provide a real challenge for the competitors, and plenty of excitement for spectators. Some stages will also see drivers go the ‘wrong way’ around the circuit!
Notable entries include multiple motorsport champion and TV stunt driver Paul Swift, who has won seven British Autotest titles, three Tarmac Rally Championships and recently won the 75th Anniversary Rallycross event at Croft. Swift will pilot a Ford Escort Mk2. Meanwhile, the 2007 Scottish Rally Champions Gary and Gordon Adam have also confirmed their return to motorsport with an entry in a similar Escort Mk2.
A number of competitors that took part in the Dukeries Rally, held at Donington in October are set to compete again on the Donington Rally, including Paul Alexander who finished third. The Dukeries Rally was the first competitive rally event to be held at Donington since the 1990s, and was a great success, leading to the creation of this Donington Rally, a new event for 2016.
As ever with rallying, the machinery on show will be full of diversity, and traditional rally machines such as Subaru Imprezas, Mitsubishi Evos and Ford Escorts will be joined by more unusual machines including sporty-looking Darrians, Triumphs and even a classic Talbot Sunbeam!
Donington Park Sporting Director Bob Adams commented: “We are really looking forward to starting our new motorsport season, and the Donington Rally is a great way to get the year going. We’re expecting a fantastic entry of cars and if it’s anything like our last rally, it should be a spectacular event for spectators and competitors!”
Tickets for the Imperial Commercials Volkswagen Donington Rally will be available for purchase upon arrival at the circuit, priced at £10, with free entry for children aged 13 and under.
