Supercars and Superbikes at Donington this September

September is set to be a sizzling month of speed at Donington Park, with major events for the British GT and BRDC British F3 Championships, and then the MCE British Superbike Championship just a week after.

First, it’s the supercars – new British Champions will be crowned at Donington Park on 10-11 September as the British GT and BRDC British F3 Championships host their final rounds of the year.

British GT is now one of the world’s top sports car series, boasting huge grids of incredible supercars from the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Lamborghini and many more. This year, with three teams still in with a chance of winning the title, the two hour race at Donington is set to be tense and full of drama. Look out too, for TV chef Paul Hollywood, who will be racing an Aston Martin!

Meanwhile, young drivers with sights set on Formula One will also go for their 2016 title, in the BRDC British F3 Championship. With three races across the weekend, the crown will be fought out by four drivers; Ricky Collard (son of BTCC ace Rob Collard), Brazilian Matheus Leist, Australian Thomas Randle and Briton Toby Sowery,  chased by a grid full of international talent.

As well as these intense title battles, there will be lots more exciting action to look forward to from supporting races for the Ginetta GT5 Challenge, Ginetta Racing Drivers Club, the classic GTs from Equipe GTS, the Volkswagen Racing Cup and the BRSCC Saloon & Sportscar Trophy.

A week later, Superbikes will take over Donington Park, with dramatic action coming from the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship on 16-18 September.

British Superbikes is one of the most exciting forms of motorsport in the UK, with thrill-a-minute racing from gladiatorial riders at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour!

The Donington round comes at a crucial point of the season, and the circuit has the honour of hosting the first round of the ‘Showdown’, where the top six riders in the series get elevated to Title Fighter Status. After this event, only those six riders can win the coveted title, but with their points closed right up, the championship becomes a real battle.

So far the men to beat in 2016 have been series legend Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne and Donington-local Leon Haslam. Byrne has seven wins to his name and Haslam four, but just 21 points (less than a race win) now separates the pair, with races at Oulton Park still to come before the BSB ‘circus’ arrives at Donington. Byrne and Haslam have already secured their places in the Showdown, as has Australian Jason O’Halloran. Then it’s Michael Laverty, Dan Linfoot and James Ellison filling the top-six, but Richard Cooper, Luke Mossey and Peter Hickman are well within striking distance and will be looking to get into the Top Six.

Outside the top-six there is still much to play for amongst a world class international field, with further fantastic supporting races from the packed grids of British Supersport, Superstock, Motostar, World Sidecars and more.

Donington Park Managing Director Christopher Tate commented: “We’ve had an extremely busy and successful season so far at Donington Park, and September looks set to be a brilliant month of action for two of Britain’s best-loved motorsport championships. British GT has gone from strength to strength in recent years, while the return of the F3 name is a great boost for the industry, and a key proving ground for young drivers.

“British Superbikes is a sensational spectacle for any motorsport fan, and the round at Donington is going to be absolutely crucial for the title battle. Donington and motorbikes are a match made in heaven, and with big screens around the venue and our popular infield campsite open for the event, fans won’t miss a second of the action. You’re guaranteed to be thrilled!”
