Tom Wood secures best result yet in Ginetta Juniors at Rockingham
Donington Park-backed racer Tom Wood claimed his best result yet in the Ginetta Junior Championship, with a thoroughly deserved second place at Rockingham in Northamptonshire last weekend (27-28 August).
His best result came in the third race of the weekend, which he started from pole position, having also secured strong finishes of 12th and sixth in the opening two races. With the top-six finishers in race two reversed on the grid for race three, Tom was in an ideal position to secure a season’s best result. Team mate Harry King was able to edge past on the first lap, but Tom still held second place early on, before the more experienced Seb Perez forced his way through on lap three. Determined to put on a show in front of the watching British Touring Car paddock, Tom fought back and passed Perez on lap four, and began closing on his team mate before ultimately running out of time, but still secured an outstanding second place finish, completing a dream one-two result for his Elite Motorsport team.
Tom had struggled for pace in qualifying due to an engine problem and started 14th on the grid for the opening race on Saturday. Making a decent start, he climbed to 13th on the first lap and claimed 12th place with a move on the penultimate lap.
Lining-up just outside the top-10 for race two, a superb opening lap saw him gain four places to cross the line in eighth place. Fired-up, he then gained another two places on lap three, moving past Sebastian Priaulx and Connor Grady to climb to sixth place, a position he was to hold until the end, which also secured him second place in the Rookie class, and set-up his superb performance in the third race of the weekend.
After his strongest weekend yet since graduating from karting, Tom commented: “What a great way to end the weekend with a second overall podium of the year! After struggling in qualifying ending 14th and then having a second place and a one-two for the team I’m just over the moon! It was even more special having the support of Christopher Tate there at Rockingham.”
Tom is next back in action on 17-18 September at Silverstone. For more information on Tom Wood, visit www.tomwoodracing.co.uk.
