Touring Cars and Historic Festival headline busy April at Donington Park
After last month's motorcycle headliners, cars take centre stage at Donington Park this April, with major race events for the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and the Donington Historic Festival. As well as major headline meetings, there a selection of national level events, as well as a major new series making its Donington debut. Here’s a run-down of this month’s excitement:
8 April (Saturday) – Historic Sports Car Club
The Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) is one of the premier organisers of historic motorsport in the UK, and will hold a total of nine races for a mixture of classic single seaters and sports cars. Series in action include Formula Ford, Road Sports and Touring Cars, with the much-celebrated Derek Bell Trophy set to provide a stunning spectacle with powerful Formula 2, Formula 5000 and Formula 3 single seaters returning to battle. Further entertainment comes from the Guards Trophy for pre-1966 GT and sports racing cars, as well as the popular Classic Clubmans series.
9 April (Sunday) – MG Car Club
Just a day after the HSCC excitement comes action from one of Britain’s most cherished manufacturers. The MG Car Club features 10 races from a huge variety of machinery, all of which will have rolled off the famous Longbridge production line at the start of their lives. Famous and notable cars in racing action range from the iconic Midgets, Sprites and MGBs, as well as the more modern ZRs, MGFs and even the classic Metro!
15-16 April (Sat/Sun) – Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship
Britain’s biggest car racing championship heads to Donington for its traditional April date. The opening races at Brands Hatch delivered the usual intense bumper to bumper racing as well as a few surprises, with Tom Ingram, Gordon Shedden and Andrew Jordan taking victories. Donington Park is famed for hosting dramatic BTCC action, and this year’s event should be no different with the highest quality grid for years, as well as a packed support race package including Ginetta Juniors, featuring Donington’s own Tom Wood, Ginetta GT4 Supercup, British F4, Renault Clio Cup and the Porsche Carrera Cup. Tickets are available in advance from £15 by clicking here, while the popular infield campsite will also be in operation.
22-23 April (Sat/Sun) – MotorSport Vision Racing
The much-anticipated LMP3 Cup makes its official race debut, with brand new prototype cars almost identical to those seen in the LMP1 and LMP2 categories that race at Le Mans. With monstrous V8 engines and an entry of highly professional teams and drivers, this is a series that the motorsport community has been looking forward to throughout the winter. As well as two 60 minute races for the LMP3 Cup, there will also be a number of additional races for sports, saloons and single seaters.
28-30 April (Fri/Sat/Sun) – Donington Historic Festival
One of the highlights on the worldwide historic motorsport calendar! The Donington Historic Festival has become a true celebration of all things historic motorsport, with a three day event to cram in as much content as possible. This year’s running will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the re-opening of Donington Park, with cars from as far back as the 1920s in action. As well as thrilling racing, there are a number of huge car displays and parades, as well as plenty of opportunities to ‘get involved’ with stunt and drifting experiences, as well as Auto Solos and dream passenger rides on public roads in the local area. Tickets are available from £16 here.
Tickets for all national level events are available on the gate only. For all motorsport events, children aged 13 and under go free!
