Whats on at Donington in March: Rallying to kick start season this Sunday!
The 2017 Donington Park motorsport season gets into gear this March, with the first race events of the year, major season launch days and tests, plus one of the highlights of the year; the opening round of the spectacular MCE British Superbike Championship! Tickets to Donington events are among the best value in the country, while children aged 13 and under go free to all race meetings! Here’s a run-down of things to look forward to this month:
5 March (Sunday) – Imperial Commercials VW Donington Rally
The Donington season launches this Sunday with the excitement of stage rallying, courtesy of the Imperial Commercials VW Donington Rally, run by the Dukeries Motor Club. A capacity line-up of 80 cars will compete for honours in one of the most unique events of the year, as Donington is transformed into a series of special stages with tyre chicanes, extreme hairpin turns and off road sections to give the drivers a real test! 16 March (Thursday) – BTCC Season Launch
This is the day all fans of British Touring Cars have been waiting for! Britain’s top car racing series will show off its new cars, drivers and liveries at Donington Park on 16 March, with all the cars taking to the track for a vital test session in the afternoon. This is the first chance for spectators to see Plato, Neal, Shedden, Turkington and co in action this year, and entry to the circuit is free of charge from 12.30pm! Find out more here.
18-19 March (Sat/Sun) – 750 Motor Club
The first race event of the year is courtesy of the 750 Motor Club, who are based at the circuit. The club is famed for putting on brilliant racing courtesy of a number of sports and saloon car championships, and grid sizes are often in the mid-20s, so fans are encouraged to be at Redgate corner on the opening laps to see big fields and potential drama heading towards them! 22 March (Wednesday) – British Superbike pre-season test day
A day to look forward to for bike fans! This is a chance to see this year’s line-up for the MCE British Superbike Championship in action on the Donington Grand Prix circuit, as well as hundreds of riders from the various support categories. Entry is free all day, so don’t miss out on the chance to see Shakey Byrne, Leon Haslam and Josh Brookes on track ahead of the opening round! More details here.
24-26 March (Fri/Sat/Sun) – Thundersport GB
Thundersport is one of the key proving grounds for top line motorcycle racers across the world. Numerous world class racers have made their name here over the years including Casey Stoner, Cal Crutchlow and Alex and Sam Lowes. The racing is always extremely hard fought, and it’s not unusual to see upwards of 30 races across the weekend, so this is an ideal way for fans to get their bike fix at the start of the year! 31 March – 2 April (Fri/Sat/Sun) – MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship opening round
The big one! The most eagerly anticipated British Superbike season in years kicks off at Donington Park at the end of March, with a grid brimming with international riders all determined to give the Brits a run for their money. Series legend Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne and Donington-local Leon Haslam are set to re-ignite their title battle from 2016, but former champion Josh Brookes is back to prove his worth, while ex-World Superbike Champion Sylvain Guintoli also returns as he bids to add the British crown to his 2014 World Superbike title. With a full support race package, this is where all bike fans will want to be at the end of March, with spaces on the vibrant infield campsite also available.
