Donington Park was treated to five varied and exciting truck races from the British Truck Racing Championship and International Truck Prix today (Sunday 13 August) at the circuit’s jumbo-sized HGV Festival, Convoy in the Park.
Three BTRC bouts were contested through the day with Ryan Smith continuing his Saturday sweep in the first race of the day. The reigning champion fought his way through the field to take the lead on the final lap from Craig Reid in tricky wet conditions. John O’Rourke followed in third.
The next BTRC race of the weekend featured a change in the form book when Smith didn’t even make the podium with the win going to Simon Reid ahead of Steven Powell and David Jenkins. Smith was fourth. The final race was won once again by Simon Reid in his Iveco Stralis with Stuart Oliver and Ryan Smith rounding out the top three.
The second day of the inaugural International Truck Prix started with another win for Jamie Anderson, who took the honours in both Saturday races. He was followed by John Newell and Martin Gibson. In the reverse grid second race, Anderson fought through the pack in the hope of a fourth win of the weekend but he wasn't able to make it, being denied by Mark Taylor by just 0.177s. Martin Gibson again finished third.
The packed race timetable also included action from the Pickup Truck Racing Championship, MG Owners Club, Intermarque Silhouette Series and CNC Heads Championship. Full results from all racing can be found here.
The super-sized event rocked Donington Park off-track too with hundreds of show trucks filling the infield all weekend. The entertainment continued at the Main Stage with live music all day and awards for the best show trucks. The Live Action Arena included Truck Drifting, F1 Stock Cars and culminated in the crowd-pleasing Caravan Smash which brought the off-track action to a dramatic conclusion.
That wraps up another brilliant Convoy in the Park, there will be more British Truck Racing Championship action coming up later in the year with five races at Snetterton on the 16/17 September and the season finale at the annual Trucks and Fireworks spectacular at Brands Hatch on 5/6 November.
