KMR Sport’s championship leader Tom Mills set the fastest time in qualifying this morning, securing pole for the first Donington Park race of the weekend at 17.45 this afternoon.
However the 18-year-old was denied the opportunity to claim another pole double, after stopping out on circuit while pushing on his final lap. Fortec’s Colin Queen took advantage to take his first pole of the season for race two, with that grid based on each driver’s second fastest times.
It was an exciting battle between the pair to top the session, with both exchanging fastest times. Mills eventually brought his time down to a 1m27.250s, nearly 2.4 seconds faster than last year’s best pole time. He looked on course to improve as well, having set an improved time in sector one before stopping with an issue.
That potentially opened the door for Queen to grab the fastest time in the session, but while the American’s final time was an improvement, he was just 0.111s away from Mills’ benchmark, and had to settle for second place.
Evans GP’s Cooper Webster was third fastest, a couple of tenths away from Queen, and a quarter of a second clear of Silverstone race winner Harri Reynolds in his Elite Motorsport car.
His teammate Josh Irfan was just 0.079s further back, and 0.049s ahead of Liam McNeilly’s Fox Motorsport machine, with the young Brit back out on track after his testing accident yesterday.
Fortec’s Ruhaan Alva was eighth quickest, a tenth of a second clear of KMR’s Jeremy Fairbairn, who was the final driver within a second of the pole pace.
Evans GP’s Kai Daryanani ended his first qualifying session in the series by completing the top-10, and was just over a second off Mills.
For the race two grid, formed by each driver’s second fastest times, Queen took pole, 0.174s ahead of Mills, with Webster third again.
Alva jumps up to fourth on the race two grid, ahead of McNeilly and Irfan, with Reynolds, Fairbairn and Daryanani all within a second of the pace. KMR’s Jack Clifford will complete the race two grid top-10.
The first race of the weekend, the Silverstone carryover race will commence at 14.15, with the grid based on the qualifying order set three weeks ago. The first conventional race of the weekend, with the grid based on today’s qualifying result, will take place at 17.45 today.
