Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin took the upper hand in the championship battle, after taking his second victory of the season in race one at Donington Park.
Voisin had already enjoyed an ideal start to the event with a double pole position in qualifying, and it only became better after making a rapid start to the race. While he ran away to Redgate, there was drama for his title challengers at turn one, as a four car incident wiped out McKenzy Cresswell’s chances, and dropped Joseph Loake way down the order.
After a safety car to clear up the drama, Voisin controlled the contest despite a second safety car appearance at the end of lap seven, to take the flag clear of Loake’s JHR teammate Matthew Rees, with another title contender, Hitech Pulse-Eight's Alex Dunne third. In the process, Voisin extended his championship lead to 28 points over Dunne, who moves up to second thanks to Loake's dramas.
The British-Swiss driver only needs to extend his margin by another eight points in race two tomorrow morning to wrap up the title a race early.
Arden VRD's James Hedley took fourth having passed Hitech's Souta Arao, who finished fifth.
Fortec's Max Esterson returned to the top-six after his best qualifying session of the season, ahead of teammate Jarrod Waberski who climbed up from 10th on the grid.
Nico Christodoulou (Arden VRD) gained four spots on his way to eighth, ahead of Douglas Motorsport's Tymek Kucharczyk, while JHR's Loake recovered to complete the top-10 having dropped to 13th on lap one. He is now 37 points away from Voisin in the standings though, and will have to close that gap in race two tomorrow to remain in the title fight.
