Dunne fights past Voisin to take title fight down to last race

22 October 2023

Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Alex Dunne caught and passed pole sitter Callum Voisin to win the second race of the weekend at Donington Park, and take the title fight down to the final race.

Voisin led the early stages of the race, but ran wide at the Melbourne Hairpin on lap six and Dunne capitalised seconds later at Goddards, the pair banging wheels in the process as Dunne forced his way through. The Irishman then pulled away to take his fifth win of the season, but Voisin is still well placed to wrap up the title this afternoon.

Voisin made a good start from pole position to hold the lead from Dunne, who came under early pressure from Fortec's Max Esterson. Voisin could have won the title a race early if Dunne slipped behind Esterson, but the reigning British F4 champion was able to shake off Esterson after a couple of laps, and then commenced his charge.

The gap came down to half a second almost immediately, and on lap six Voisin went in too deep at the penultimate corner, allowing Dunne to get a better run on the approach to Goddards. The Hitech driver swooped out of the championship leader's tow and dived up the inside. The pair banged wheels, but no damage was done, and the lead changed.

Dunne then set a string of fastest laps, frequently over half a second quicker than his opposition, and eventually took the flag almost 4.5 seconds clear, with Voisin settling for second ahead of Esterson, and taking a 22-point lead into the championship finale this afternoon.

JHR Developments' Matthew Rees was fourth ahead of Elite's McKenzy Cresswell, with James Hedley (Arden VRD) and Tymek Kucharczyk seventh for Douglas Motorsport, having started 11th.

JHR's Joseph Loake is now out of title contention after finishing eighth, with Jarrod Waberski (Fortec) and David Morales (JHR) completing the top-10.

The final race of the season is due to commence at 15.20.
