BTCC Race 3: Chilton drives to victory in final Donington encounter

27 April 2025

Tom Chilton claimed his first victory of the 2025 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season with an impressive lights to flag drive from pole in the third and final race of the day at Donington Park this afternoon (Sunday).

Chilton was gifted a prize opportunity to lead following a top-six reversal of the grid following a random draw earlier and he duly made the most of the chance. The Team Vertu Hyundai made a good start to lead the field down to Redgate whilst fellow front row starter Daniel Rowbottom slotted into second ahead of Jake Hill.

As the field flowed down the Craner Curves for a second time, Tom Ingram in another the Vertu liveried Hyundais attacked Hill to seize third whilst race one and two victory Ash Sutton quickly slotted through to take fourth.

Reigning champion Hill found himself losing ground rapidly during the early stages with Dan Cammish the next to make a pass with a dive at the Old Hairpin. Over the following laps, Hill dropped behind Chris Smiley and Adam Morgan before losing further ground when Gordon Shedden ran through the gravel whilst attempting to pass.

At the front however, it continued to be a smooth ride for Chilton. Behind him, Ingram moved up to second, with Sutton and Cammish also passing Rowbottom in the following laps, but the leader was able to maintain his position comfortably.

As the race drew to a close, the gap between Chilton, Ingram and Sutton narrowed right down. But Sutton was unable to find a decisive way past to take second from Ingram. This left Chilton in the clear to drive past the chequered flag first.

Cammish continued his forward progress to take fourth behind the leading trio, with Morgan placing a third Hyundai in the top-five after passing Rowbottom late on. Rowbottom did secure sixth however, making sure of a top-six lockout for Hyundai and Ford machinery.

Mikey Doble edged out Chris Smiley for seventh whilst Aiden Moffat took ninth. Hill wound up 10th after briefly dropping out of the top-10 midway through the race.
