Convoy in the Park brought a truckload of thrills to Donington Park today (Sunday) as the annual festival of truck racing and family fun drew to a close with three races from the British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) and two International Truck Prix races. David Smith, Ryan Smith and Michael Oliver scored victories in the BTRC, while Jamie Anderson and Simon Reid split the International Truck Prix spoils.
The first BTRC race of the day, and the third of the weekend, saw David Smith lead away from pole position to win ahead of David Jenkins and John Bowler. Jake Evans, meanwhile, won in the Division 2 class behind the wheel of his MAN TGX truck. Nine-time champion Ryan Smith was not classified, but the Worldwide Truck Racing driver would bounce back in the next race.
A feisty race four saw pole sitter Richard Collett involved in several scraps with competitors, including a tight battle with the trio of Team Oliver Racing machines; however, it would be Ryan Smith who would charge from sixth on the grid to claim his first victory of the Convoy in the Park weekend. Evans once again claimed Division 2 honours.
The final BTRC race saw the top eight from race three reversed, with Martin Gibson starting on pole position. However, it was Michael Oliver who started strongest, powering his way from fourth to the lead by the start of lap two, where he would stay to win, becoming the first double truck race winner of the event. Sami Ojanen overcame Simon Cole and Evans to top the Division 2 class.
In the International Truck Prix, Jamie Anderson would claim pole position early doors, before subsequently controlling the field to win ahead of Simon Reid and Mark Taylor. Motorcycle racing legend John McGuinness would suffer another disappointing DNF following his second retirement in a row.
The drama came early on in the final International Truck Prix, and the final truck race of the weekend. Pole sitter Jamie Anderson failed to start the race, promoting Mark Taylor to the top spot on the grid. However, Taylor would suffer a puncture after being passed by Simon Reid for the lead, with the latter going on to win by only four tenths over Nathan Smith.
In the day’s other competing categories, both Track Action contests were won by the Skoda Octavia of Paul Roddison, while Simon Allaway made it two wins from two in the CNC Heads Sports / Saloon Car Championship behind the wheel of his stunning Lotus Esprit V8. Josh Selvadorai and Oliver Kerr claimed a win apiece in the Junior Saloon Car Championship, while the OT Publishing Coupe Cup contest was won by Ben Wilkinson.
