The Donington Park racing season is just a few weeks away, and there’s a brilliant year of motorsport to come in the East Midlands across two, four and six wheels!
Every major UK racing category will make at least one visit to the circuit this year, while there’s international highlights, top notch club racing, and everything in between from March until the end of October.
INTERNATIONAL HEADLINER
The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship returns to the East Midlands on 10-12 July for the circuit’s biggest international event of the year. Motorcycle racing fans from around the world will descend on the venue to catch their heroes in action, with some of the planet’s top racers set to do battle across three headline races.
Local rider Tarran Mackenzie, twin pairing Sam and Alex Lowes, plus Moto2 race winner Jake Dixon will be the Brits to back this summer. They’ll be up against leading overseas talents including MotoGP race winner Miguel Oliveira, who joins the series with BMW, Ducati’s pre-season favourite Nicolò Bulega, former champion Álvaro Bautista and a cast of leading lights from across the globe.
A big support race package features more international action, while national content will complete the timetable. Fans are also treated to a fully open paddock with easy access to the Paddock Show big stage and the unique Victory Lane segment, where all the main race podium celebrations take place.
DOUBLE HELPINGS FROM THE BEST OF BRITISH
The British Touring Car (BTCC) and British Superbike Championships (BSB) will each make two visits to Donington Park this year.
The BTCC’s first visit on 18/19 April is the season opener for the UK’s most popular four-wheel racing category, with three headline races on the National Circuit. The series boasts even more racing this year, with a qualifying race on Saturday added to the triple-header on the main Sunday raceday. The packed grid of super saloons returns for more action on the Grand Prix circuit on 22/23 August.
BSB delivers unbelievable drama year in year out, and the rounds at Donington Park have always been amongst the most dramatic of the season. The first BSB event on 15-17 May will be followed by a crucial late season round on 2-4 October. With three BSB races at each event, both will go a long way to deciding the outcome of this year’s title.
In addition, there’ll be an early chance to see this year’s BSB grid, with a major pre-season test on 3/4 April.
SUPER TRUCKS AND SUPERCARS
The ‘biggest’ racing category in the UK is the main on track focal point of the annual Convoy in the Park event on 8/9 August, with multiple contests for the heavyweight machines of the British Truck Racing Championship. A massive off track festival of family activities, live music and hundreds of show trucks adds to the circuit’s most vibrant family event of the year.
Meanwhile, one of the country’s other top categories, the British GT Championship, again visits the circuit on 5/6 September, with supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren and more set to engage in battle, with support race action headlined by the single-seater stars of the future in GB3 and GB4.
RETRO FAVOURITES
The historic racing scene across two and four wheels is flourishing, and Donington Park hosts top line retro racing throughout the year. The major four-wheel highlight is the Donington Historic Festival on 1-3 May, with three days of superb action covering a century of motorsport across the full range of saloons, sports cars and single-seaters, plus huge club car display areas.
Meanwhile, the premier bike event is the CRMC Classic Motorcycle Festival on 1/2 August, showcasing legendary two wheeled machinery mainly from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. One of the busiest events of the year typically features up to 40 races across a packed schedule, and big off track displays and parades.
The Vintage Motorsport Festival also returns on 23 June, returning priceless cars to the racetrack from the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC), covering both the pre and post-war eras.
MUCH MORE BESIDES
Donington Park is visited by a huge range of car and bike events throughout the year, with racing on offer pretty much every weekend from March to October. The season is bookended by stage rallies, run by the Dukeries Motor Club, with the Zone Systems Dukeries Rally set for 15 March and the Donington Rally ending the year on 6 December.
JDM JAM on 25 May will celebrate the Japanese automotive scene and is the venue’s headline car show. Other highlights include the GB4 and GT Cup Championships on 27/28 June, encompassing the Supercar Collective, Classic Sports Cars & GT cars on 4 July, a Best of British event the day after, and the Ferrari Challenge UK series on 19/20 September.
The Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC), 750 Motor Club, MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR), Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), British Racing & Sports Car Club (BRSCC), British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) featuring the Classic Touring Car Racing Club (CTCRC), and Porsche Club Racing are all on this year’s calendar.
Meanwhile for bike racers, there are dual events from both No Limits Racing and the British Motorcycle Racing Club to look forward to.
