Elite Motorsport’s stand-in driver Yani Stevenheydens claimed a victory in his maiden GB4 weekend after a controlled drive in the second race at Donington Park.
The experienced Belgian driver made a strong start from pole, withstood two safety car periods, multiple yellow flags and constant pressure from teammate Fred Green, who had to settle for third ahead of Hillspeed's Enzo Hallman.
Stevenheydens made a strong start from pole, but the race was immediately neutralised after Arden’s Solenn Amrouche was nudged into the gravel at Redgate after contact with Archie Bullard.
The race resumed with just under 14 minutes still remaining, with Stevenheydens holding off Green on the first tour.
Hallman moved up to third on the restart lap with a move on Pace Performance’s Torrin Byrne at Goddards, but shortly afterwards the safety car was deployed again with Lily-May Watkins in the gravel at Redgate with Bullard again involved.
Action continued with six minutes to go, with Stevenheydens again leading the field away. There was further drama on the restart lap as a front-wingless Josh McLean went for a wild ride at Goddards, with the race continuing, though with double waved yellows at Goddards. Bullard’s race came to an end at McLeans on lap nine, with yellow flags displaying at that corner for the remainder of the contest also.
Through it all, Stevenheydens kept his cool to clinch victory just ahead of Green, who made inroads into Alex O’Grady’s championship lead, with the Irishman only able to take sixth.
Hallman kept hold of third ahead of Byrne, with Fortec’s Thomas Ingram Hill moving up to fifth at O’Grady’s expense late on.
Douglas Motorsport's Dayton Coulthard was sixth, just ahead of Hillspeed's Connor Willis, with Pace Performance's John O'Donnell and Fortec's Franciszek Cegielski completing the top-10.
The final race of the weekend is due to start at the amended time of 17.50 BST.
