Yamaha's reigning Motul FIM Superbike World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu set the fastest time in the opening free practice session of the weekend at Donington Park this morning (Friday).

The Turkish contender's time of 1m27.805s came in the final moments of the 45 minute session, and put him just a tenth of a second clear of Kawaskai's Jonathan Rea, who set his best lap inside the first five minutes.

Razgatlioglu session-topping time came after an eventful session, which included an overshoot at the Goddards hairpin and onto the grass with 16 minutes remaining.

Ducati's Michael Ruben Rinaldi was third fastest with a late time of his own, and within a quarter of a second of the outright pace, putting him ahead of Rea's teammate and local man Alex Lowes, who was fourth and 0.041s further back thanks to his early session time.

Championship leader Alvaro Bautista posted the fifth quickest lap, 0.356s away from the outright best and just under three tenths of a second ahead of BMW's Scott Redding.

Axel Bassani put his Ducati seventh, and a tenth of a second clear of Honda's Iker Lecuona, with Loris Baz (BMW) and Philipp Oettl (Ducati) completing the top-10.

The second WorldSBK free practice session of the day is due to commence at 15.00.
